Wedding Planner Interview: Amber Terese Events

Recently engaged and considering whether you should hire a wedding planner? Do you already have a wedding planner, but are unsure of what they actually do?

Today, I’ve brought on Amber Jensen of Amber Terese Events to share some insights that will hopefully help you out on your wedding planning journey, no matter where you’re at in the process. Whether you’re actively planning, passively planning, or just doing some fun little pre-engagement internet browsing, hopefully this interview with one of my favorite Minnesota wedding planners will help you out!

Do you think there are any common misconceptions about planners?

One big misconception is that they aren't really needed. There's a big misunderstanding about what planners do and the amount of work that goes into planning (which is a lot).

Who would benefit the most from having a wedding planner?

Busy professionals with a lot going on at work and in life, who just want to celebrate their day and enjoy the process. People who want to actually enjoy the wedding and make it a celebration, rather than making it another job on their plate. People who want to sit in and enjoy the fun of being engaged.

Who wouldn’t need a planner quite as much? Is there anyone who wouldn’t benefit?

A common misconception would be that, if you're really Type A, you'll be good at planning.
Often, Type A people love working with planners even more! People who don't benefit as much from wedding planners are already parallel to the industry, and are already used to working with vendors and such.  Even smaller scale elopements wouldn't benefit as much from full planning, but would still be great candidates for a wedding management package instead.

What do you wish engaged couples to know about wedding planners?

That we are your support group. Your partner. We are not going to plan everything without your knowledge or input! We actually put ourselves in your shoes, including the knowledge of your loves story and what’s important to you, and plan around those things.

What do you wish vendors knew about planners?

That we will be your best friends and your biggest cheerleaders! There used to be this idea that we were just taking money from the couple - but we really do advocate for professionals and great vendors. I don’t know a single planner who doesn’t advocate for and support other wedding vendors.

Do you have a "secret trick" or wedding planning superpower?

I’m good at people! Anticipating needs, reading emotions, etc.. Empathy is high on my list of priorities, and I think that while I can lean into the creative side… the area where I really shine is people.

Can you talk a bit more about what that means for you (and your couples)?

Weddings are so filled with intense emotions, and people aren’t always aware of what those emotions can do to the body and the mind. I try to care for everyone that’s present, and make sure everyone is enjoying the day. This means being on the lookout for little things like “mom needs a tissue”, “bride needs a breather”, etc. I like to look out for those little things that can be helpful on such a big day.

Is there a type of client that you work especially well with?

Type A clients! They like knowing they have someone who has experience, so they can trust that their plans will happen the way they want them to. That said, we also really love a creative client - someone who lets us flex those muscles.

Favorite wedding decor detail?

Cake meadows! It’s such a fun way to highlight a moment that could otherwise be easily missed.
